First edition in book form, extra-illustrated, of Flaubert's most famous work. This copy is extra-illustrated with a frontispiece, engraved title, etchings, and an autograph letter from Flaubert.

Two volumes, octavo. Frontispiece portrait of Flaubert, engraved title, and 17 etchings by Boilvin and Fourie. Modern red morocco signed by Canape with original wrappers and backstrips bound in, top edge gilt, uncut; slipcase. [Bound With:] Autograph letter signed, "G. Flaubert," to an unnamed recipient, n.d., Croisset. Regarding encouraging their mutual friend [Victor] Hugo to contribute to a subscription for a monument.
