MARCHESINUS, Johannes (b. c.1300). Mammotrectus super Bibliam. Venice: Bonetus Locatellus for Octavianus Scotus, 5 June 1492.

Incunable edition of a popular guide to understanding the text of the Bible and church practices for priests. The text was probably first printed in 1470 by Peter Schoeffer, and thus went into many subsequent editions, quite a few of which are in smaller formats such as this octavo printing—reflecting this work's use as a practical guide for priests and perhaps a desire for portability. Goff M-251; Bod-inc M-089; BMC V 440; BSB-Ink M-166; GW M20820.

Super-median octavo (170 x 119mm). 172 leaves. Woodcut initials (browned at ends, scattered wormholes, some small edge repairs to last few leaves). 19th-century marbled calf, preserving an older endleaf, title gilt on spine (a little worn at extremities). Provenance: a number of washed and crossed out inscriptions and pentrials on endleaves, including Portuguese book curse[?] in red dated 1528 on preserved endleaf.
