LI, Peilan (1875-1908) after Boqi Zou (1819-1869). [Map of China]. China, Guangxu period, 1896.

Lithographic map of China mounted as four hanging scrolls.

Lithographic map of China, ink printed on paper, texts in Chinese, composed of four separate strips mounted as hanging scrolls, old silver-white silk protective wrapper and borders with bird pattern, wooden rollers with original protective cloth at ends, each strip with approximately 1275 x 345 on 1390 x 355 mm sheet, overall with the mounting approximately 1745 x 385 mm each. The map lies on grids defined by meridian and parallel lines, traversing horizontally from 12°E to 21°W, and vertically from 20°N to 44°N. There is text along the left margin of scroll one (reading from right to left), at the bottom of scrolls one and two; these provide commentaries of the two capitals (Beijing and Shenyan) and sixteen provinces included in the map. A inset map at the lower right corner shows an island located below the land in scroll three. Text at the bottom of scroll four include an inscription written by the producer of the maps and a chart of cartographical guide. Text written in pencil by a modern hand on the exterior of scroll three, below the empty title slip. (Paper slightly toned, wormholes throughout causing the loss of some information, light soiling. Scroll two: paper loss at the upper left corner, ink fading more than other scrolls. Light staining on scroll two and four and occasionally the silk mounting. Texts in scroll three slightly tinted.)
