詳情
DE BRAHM, William Gerard (1718-1799) [and COOK, James]. A Map of South Carolina and part of Georgia containing the Whole Sea Coast: all the Islands, Inlets, Rivers, Creeks, Parishes, Townships, Boroughs, Roads, and Bridges… [London:] William Faden, 1780.

Rare, detailed wall map depicting the Southeast coast from the North Carolina boundary line south to St. Mary’s River in Georgia, and as far inland as Augusta. When de Brahm’s map was first published in 1757, it was the first time that any large area of the American South was mapped with scientific accuracy. It was revised in 1780 for Thomas Jeffrey’s American Atlas. Primarily using the information from James Cook’s 1773 map of South Carolina, “most noticeable is the greatly increased knowledge of the minor creeks and streams, which form a heavy dendritic pattern over the whole map” (Cumming). Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps, no. 310b; Schwartz & Ehrenberg, pl. 101 (detail of 1st ed).

Hand-colored engraved map comprising four engraved and joined sheets, large engraved cartouche bottom right, together approximately 1385 x 1255mm (54.5 x 49.5 inches) sheet size (top edge hinged to later paper panel with grommets, some mild offsetting and oxidation, tiny loss in blank area of cartouche, some light wear at folds, joins and edges, these reinforced on verso, small marginal chips at top edge).
