[CLELAND, John, attrib. (1709-1789).] Memoirs of an Oxford Scholar. Containing, his Amour with the Beautiful Miss L—— of Essex. London: W. Reeve, 1756.

First edition. This kiss-and-tell story purports on the title-page to have been written by the Oxford scholar himself. However, it has been attributed instead to the middle-aged John Cleland, author of Fanny Hill: or, the Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure—a book which resulted in his arrest. This is another classic, but somewhat less scurrilous than the notorious Fanny Hill.

12mo (157 x 94mm). Half-title. Four pages of advertisements at end. (Toned, marginal tear from N6.) 19th-century calf (edges and spine worn, rebacked with old spine laid down). Provenance: C. Burke (ownership inscription on half-title).
