Unique collection of photomicrographs of crystals of potassium and soldium salts, dedicated to Herzog Carl Theodor of Bavaria (1839-1909) and probably intended for publication. The photographs are mounted two per card, with neat manuscript captions giving their names, chemical formulae, and other details. They are accompanied by eight manuscript pages in German on three folded sheets: a dedication to Herzog Carl Theodor; a 48-line poem entitled “Die Gase!” on hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine, and carbon dioxide; and a foreword explaining the purpose of this work.

52 photomicrographs (88 x 54mm) mounted two each on 26 cards (168 x 110mm), with manuscript captions in ink in Latin and German. Housed with three loose manuscript sheets in original blindstamped red morocco box, cover gilt-lettered, edges gilt in imitation of page edges. Fine condition.
