EDWARDS, George (1694-1773). A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, and of Some Other Rare and Undescribed Animals. London: the author, 1743-51.

First edition of this important English ornithological work containing detailed descriptions of birds, many of which had not previously been illustrated. The majority of them were foreign species, usually drawn from live specimens in captivity in London. Linnaeus gave about 350 birds their scientific names based on Edwards's descriptions. Four parts in two volumes, quarto (295 x 225mm). Frontispiece, engraved portrait, and 210 hand-colored plates (a couple small marginal losses). Contemporary calf (worn; vol. 2 with rear board detached and front board just about).
