Expansive archive of eleven letters, documents, and pieces of ephemera from notable military and naval figures of the American Civil War, including five signed letters from Judah P. Benjamin.

The lot includes: BENJAMIN, Judah P. (1811-1884). Autograph memorandum signed ("Benjamin"), n.p., 29 January 1839. One page, 270 x 200mm. (age-toned, small chip at right edge away from text.) A legal document from early in Benjamin’s career, pertaining to the case of Harrison v. Byrne and Lawrence and addressed to the clerk of the District Court in New Orleans,. Benjamin writes: 'Please deliver to bearer the notes Annexed to petition in this case. I will give a receipt tomorrow.’ * BENJAMIN, Judah P (1811-1884). Document signed ("J. P. Benjamin"), as Confederate Secretary of War, Richmond, 30 September 1861. One page, 250 x 197mm. (slight chip at upper right edge) An appointment making J. W. Ratchford a Major in the Adjutant Generals Department. * BENJAMIN, Judah P (1811-1884). Autograph letter signed (“J.P. Benjamin”), London, 26 Nov. 1886. Two pages, 202 x 125mm., bifolium. Regarding a potential legal case sent to him by a client who can not pay initial legal fees. Benjamin seeks to find him another attorney, though adds "...I could not make to any respectable attorney the proposal you suggest..." * BENJAMIN, Judah P (1811-1884). Autograph letter signed (“J.P. Benjamin”), Paris, 6 Jan. 1880. Two pages, 202 x 125mm., bifolium. Sending a Happy New Year, referencing "...a terrible time since my accident in May last, not a single day free from pain..." Shortly before his death, he was badly injured after falling off a swiftly moving tram. * BENJAMIN, Judah P (1811-1884). Autograph endorsement signed ("J. P. Benjamin"). One page, 66 x 106mm. A short note in response to an autograph request: "My autograph / J. P. Benjamin / La." * BENJAMIN, Judah P. (1811-1884). Carte-de-visite photograph, n.d. New York: E. & H. T. Anthony. 100 x 60mm, chipped at top left and lower left. * FARRAGUT, David (1801-1870). Pair of autograph endorsements signed (“D.G. Farragut”) as Rear Admiral clipped from a document, each approx.. 70 x 202mm., one approving a Commander to receive one barrel of sperm oil. * ERICCSON, John (1803-1889). Autograph letter signed (“J. Ericcson”) to John B. Kitching, supporter of Ericsson’s development of caloric engines. Two pages, 245 x 195mm. Contains good content regarding the use of steam power and the development of caloric engines (partial fold separation at right centerfold). * ERICCSON, John (1803-1889). Autograph letter signed (“J. Ericcson”) to unnamed recipient, London, 1834. Three pages, 245 x 195mm, bifolium. A professional letter, enclosing a letter of introduction and also discussing steam power and the caloric engine (some chipping at right edge). * DAVIS, Jefferson (1808-1889). An envelope addressed in his hand to an A. A. Boughan of St, Louis, MO, postmarked 24 November in Mississippi on the verso. Eleven pieces total.
