First English edition, a presentation copy. Inscribed by the author: "To his dearest George Prothero / their fondest old Henry James. March 1914." "With the author's compliments" slip loosely inserted. Sir George Walter Prothero was an English writer and academic who served as president of the Royal Historical Society from 1901-05. Edel & Laurence A72b.

Octavo (223 x 140). Half title, frontispiece portrait of William James after an 1866 self-portrait, 5 plates, and 2 pp. advertisements at rear (small stain to first page). Original dark blue smooth cloth (two tiny nicks to spine, corners a little bumped). Provenance: George Prothero (1848-1922; authorial inscription) – pencil notes to rear endpaper.
