Presentation copy of the first edition, with charming lengthy inscription from Miss Potter and Peter Rabbit!The verso of the first plate inscribed and signed by the author, “Love to Mary Kyngston / from Miss Potter and Peter Rabbit! / and love to Joan and Phyllis and the little brother from all the little animals. (Its going to be gray squirrels next time but that is a secret! Thank you for a very nice letter last February. July 11, 11. / from Beatrix Potter.” Two of the pages are colored in with very neat and accurate watercolor, quite possibly by Beatrix Potter herself. Linder, p. 431; Quinby 19.

Quarto. Illustrated with 12 color plates, each with facing “outline” illustration intended for coloring-in; two of these are filled in with watercolor, either in the hand of Beatrix Potter herself or another skilled adult. Original color pictorial stiff wrappers (spine restored, some touches of other restoration, light spotting). Custom clamshell box.
