WASHINGTON, D.C. – ELLICOTT, Andrew (1754-1820). Plan of the City of Washington in the Territory of Columbia. Philadelphia: Engraved by Thackara & Vallance, 1792.

"No more attractive example of urban cartography can be found" (Reps). Although it was preceded by the maps of Samuel Hill and the smaller near-plagiarism by Thackara and Vallance themselves, this map of the District was the first one used by the Commissioners, and the one intended by Ellicott as the city's first plan. Furthermore, this mapping includes soundings, canals, and other important details that are not to be found in its usurpers. Burr & Goff, "The Federal City in 1793", A la Carte, pp. 126-152; Evans 24296, Wheat & Brun 531; Reps, Washington on View, p. 38.

Engraved map, 520 x 730mm (marginal tears well clear of image, weak folds reinforced on version, hinges at top margin, mild offsetting).
