DICKINSON, Emily (1830-1886). Poems. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1890. [With:] Poems. Second Series. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1891.

First editions of the poet's first two books, landmarks of American literature. A recluse throughout most of her life, Dickinson's Poems were published posthumously in a small edition of 500 copies on 12 November 1890. Aside from a small circle of family and friends, her poetry did not circulate in her lifetime and this publication gave Dickinson's work its first public exposure. The volume proved to be popular, and two more printings were required before the end of that year. Poems. Second Series followed quickly in 1891. Both volumes are Myerson's Binding B. BAL 4655; 4656; Myerson A1.1.a and A2.1.a.

Two volumes, octavo. (Vol. 1 with first contents leaf loose; vol. 2 with a little foxing.) First volume in grey and white publisher’s cloth stamped in gilt, silver floral motif, top edges gilt (lightly rubbed and soiled, joints splitting, front hinge repaired); second series in grey publisher's cloth stamped in gilt, silver floral motif (deleted inscription to upper pastedown); custom box.
