ERCILLA, Alonso de (1533–1594). Primera, segunda, y tercera partes de la Araucana. Barcelona: Sebastian de Cormellas, 1592.

Rare early small format edition of Ercilla’s heroic epic. Ercilla describes the Spanish Conquest of Chile in what would become one of the most celebrated literary works from 16th-century Spain. La araucana’s third and final part was published in 1589, and the first complete edition in 1590. This compact edition of all three parts appeared two years later. The colophon is dated 1591 and identifies the printer as the widow of Hubert Gotart. Only one copy has appeared at auction, in 1972.

Narrow 12mo (137 × 61mm). Woodcut printer’s device on title-page, part title-pages. (title-page rebacked, lightly soiled, trimmed with occasion loss of text). Later calf gilt (rehinged, rubbed). Provenance: bookplate removed from lower free endleaf.
