KING, Martin Luther Jr. (1929-1968). A Typed letter signed (“Martin L King Jr”) to Dr. James H. Halsey, Atlanta, 1 May 1961.

One page, 267 X 214mm, on Ebenezer Baptist Church letterhead, (faded, creases, small hole in top left corner).

King’s response to Dr. James H. Halsey in regards to receiving an honorary degree from the University of Bridgeport. “I can assure you that I will accept this honor with deep humility and profound gratitude.” The University of Bridgeport was one of the first institutions to award him an honorary degree for his work in the civil rights movement. King had visited Bridgeport in 1961, where he first lectured in March and returned on 4 June to receive the honorary doctorate in law.
