LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865). Partly-printed document signed ("Abraham Lincoln") as President, Washington, 14 April 1863.

One page, 251 x 447mm, countersigned by Edwin STANTON (1814-1869) as Secretary of War (likely trimmed at top edge, some letters of Lincoln's signature a tad light, original mailing folds impacting signature.)

Lincoln appoints George Burroughs as "a First Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers". Burroughs, a New Jersey native, was engaged with constructing the defenses of Nashville for much of the war, though was later breveted captain on 20 September 1863 for gallant and meritorious service at the battle of Chickamauga (Heitman).
