First English edition, a presentation copy. Warmly inscribed by the author: "For my very dear George & Fanny Prothero / their all fanciful Henry James April 1913." Sir George Walter Prothero (1848-1922) was an English writer and academic who served as the president of the Royal Historical Society from 1901-05. Mary Frances Prothero was a member of the Cambridge Ladies Dining Society, a group of supporters for women's suffrage who were also active in the campaign to grant women Cambridge degrees (the campaign would finally find success in 1948). Octavo (225 x 142mm). Half title, photographic frontispiece portrait from an 1854 daguerreotype by Mathew Brady, 2 pp. advertisements at rear. Original dark blue smooth cloth. Provenance: George & Mary Frances Prothero (1848-1922; authorial inscription) – pencil notes to rear endpapers.
