First edition in English, first issue with spelling of "Anderson" on title page. "This is the first edition of the first translation of Andersen's fairy tales into English [...] Mary Howitt learned Danish so that she might translate the stories of her friend Hans Andersen" (Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books: 1566-1910, p.17). Stories in this influential collection include: Ole Lukoie, The Daisy, The Naughty Boy, Tommelise (Thumbelina), The Rose-Elf, The Garden of Paradise, A Night in the Kitchen, Little Ida's Flowers, The Constant Tin Soldier, and The Storks.

Octavo (160 x 120mm). Four hand-colored plates, including frontispiece. Original red cloth stamped in gilt, all edges gilt (rebacked, with original spine laid down; a little wear at tips).
