The works of the great Tudor poet Edmund Spenser"here for the first time, are included Brittain's Ida, the View of Ireland and Bathurst's Latin version of the Shepheardes Calendar" (Pforzheimer). This edition was for some time erroneously believed to have been edited by Dryden. It is the third overall edition of Spenser's collected works, led by his famous sprawling and surreal allegorical poem populated by robot squires, lady knights, evil sorceresses, and sundry figures from both Classical mythology and English legend. Issue with "Calen" as catchword on 4K1v. Pforzheimer 980; Wing, S-4965.

Folio (318 x 203mm). With 12pp. manuscript at end copying out "a more copious glossary" from A-G. Title printed in red and black, part titles dated 1678, engraved frontispiece depicting Spenser's tomb, ad leaf at end (occasional dustsoiling and small stains). Contemporary calf (rebacked).
