First edition of "the first specialist work designed as a substitute for, rather than an aid to, learning"(PMM). An important reference work for the history of proper names occurring in Classical literature, Lempriere's book was the companion of a generation of scholars and students, including John Keats. Octavo (213 x 136mm). Errata leaf at end (some toning and foxing). Contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt, edges blue. Provenance: Carl G. Ekstrand (inscription dated Uppsala 1852).
