Presentation copy of the first edition, in handsome dust jacket. Inscribed and signed by the author on the front free endpaper: “for Miss L.S. Stebbing / with the author’s compliments (see pp. 57ff) / T.S. Eliot”. On page 57, Eliot’s lines, “I deny, in short, that the reader must share the beliefs of the poet in order to enjoy the poetry fully” have been emphasized in pencil.

Octavo. Original pictorial boards (mild sunning, some browning to endpapers affecting inscription), dust jacket (toned, spine panel browned and worn at ends).
