ERASMUS, Desiderius (1466-1536). De immensa dei misericordia. Translated by Gentian Hervet. London: Thomas Berthelet, 1533.

Early English edition of Erasmus's "sermon" on God's Mercy. There are two undated editions of this translation from the press of Berthelet, which STC conjectures were printed before this first dated edition. Dedicated to and translated for Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, who less than ten years later would be executed by Henry VIII for treason. Margaret had been the governess of Princess Mary, herself a translator of Erasmus, until Mary's household was dissolved upon Henry's annulment of her mother in the same year this book was printed. STC (2nd ed.), 10475.

Octavo (136 x 91mm). Type ornaments (title a little dustsoiled). Brown morocco gilt by Bedford, edges gilt (front board detached). Provenance: occasional manuscript comments – Cardiff Castle (modern bookplate).
