H[OWELL], J[ames] (1594-1666). [Dendrologia.] Dodona’s Grove, or, the Vocall Forest. [London:] T[homas] B[adger] for H. Mosley, 1640.

The Bradley Martin copy of the first edition of Howell's political allegory. Later editions would include an identification key. STC suggests that the absence of leaf A1 indicates it is among the earliest copies issued. Pforzheimer 512, Wing H3062.

Folio (287 x 185mm). Engraved frontispiece and two plates by M.Merian, Jr. (lacking pastedowns and A1 & A2 dedication leaves, some fraying at margins of frontispiece). Contemporary calf (neatly rebacked with portions of original spine laid down). Provenance: Robert Mallobarr (early ownership signature and notes to fly leaves) – Luton Library armorial bookplate – H. Bradley Martin (bookplate; his sale, Sotheby’s New York, 30 April 1990, lot 2921A).
