SACKVILLE-WEST, Vita (1892-1962). The Land. London: William Heinemann, Ltd, 1926.

First trade edition, inscribed twice. On the front endpaper: “Margaret from Vita. April 1928. ‘Water alone remains untouched by snow.’” At the rear is an additional note, "'Toujours loyal. Knole April 30 1928." Margaret is perhaps American journalist Margaret Leland Goldsmith (1894-1971). In the spring of 1928, while working in Berlin, she and Sackville-West became romantically involved. The Land, a book-length narrative poem that was also published as a limited signed edition, proved popular and won the 1926 Hawthornden Prize for Literature.

Octavo. Original brownish-red cloth, printed paper spine label. Pictorial dust jacket (spine toned, some minor wear at extremities, tape repair to top edge of front panel).
