First edition. Simon Pokagon, the son of Potawatomi patriarch Leopold Pokagon, was an author and advocate for the Native American community. Queen of the Woods was published shortly after his death in 1899 and is considered the first novel by a Native American to be devoted to the subject of Native American life.

Octavo. Frontispiece portrait, pink publisher’s notice tipped in between copyright page and dedication. Green pictorial cloth stamped in black (hinges tender, cloth rubbed, some spots of soiling).
