Rare 19th-century Johnsoniana. The first installment in Carlyle's Biographical Essays series for Chapman and Hall's railway literature collection, "Reading for Travellers." It was first published in Fraser's Magazine in May 1832 as a review of a new edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson. The most recent copy recorded in RBH was in 1950.

12mo. Half-title. Original printed wrappers (neatly rebacked with portion of original spine laid down, otherwise a bit soiled). Custom box. Provenance: John Denham Austin (Boswell and Johnson bookplate inside box).
