BACON, Francis (1561-1626). The Twoo Bookes of Francis Bacon. Of the proficience and advancement of Learning, divine and humane. London: Henrie Tomes, 1605.

First edition of Bacon's only English work printed in his lifetime, "the forerunner of the De Augmentis Scientia" (Pforzheimer). According to Pforzheimer, very few copies have the two Errata leaves, which were likely only added to later copies. STC (2nd ed.), 1164; Norman 97; Pforzheimer 36.

Quarto (178 x 129mm). Without two errata leaves as often (some sheets toned.) 19th-century red morocco by Riviere (rebacked). Provenance: series of family notes relating to Thomas Majors (dead 1754), John Major (dead 1790), Sarah Major (1793) – Charles George Milnes Gaskell, 1842-1919, English lawyer and friend of Henry Adams and Henry James (morocco bookplate).
