MCKENNEY, Thomas L. (1785-1859) and James HALL (1793-1868). History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Philadelphia: D. Rice and A.N. Hart, 1855.

Early octavo edition. The illustrations are reduced from the folio edition of 1836-1844, which Howes described as "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed." They are based on Charles Bird King's portraits in the Indian Gallery, Department of War, Washington, which were nearly all destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire. The octavo edition contained an additional plate of "Red Bird," used as the frontispiece to volume II, as well as additions to the biographies. The first octavo edition was published in 1850. Howes M-129; Sabin 43411 (described as a later issue of the 1850 first edition).

3 volumes, octavo (259 x 168mm). 120 hand-colored lithographs by J.T. Bowen, most after Charles Bird King, with tissue guards (toning and spotting, including to some plates, a few chips at edges, several plates in vol. 3 with some soiling, one caption shaved, one leaf with tears in text, title of vol. 3 detached). Original publisher's brown blindstamped morocco, all edges gilt (quite worn, joints starting and corners showing). Provenance: C. J. Bowman (ownership inscription in all three volumes).
