Cunha, Sercial, Madeira 1830
Ex Christie's March 2017. New wax capsule. Stencilled bottle. Level: into-neck
The Cunha family were the last residents of Quinta Vigia, the official residence of the Madeira government, as they inherited it in the beginning of the 1900s. Tomas Cunha Santos sold the Quinta to the government in 1970’s. The original wine company in the name of Julio A. (Augusto) Cunha was founded in 1820.
The Cunha wines in this auction came from a direct descendant whose Cunha wines were bought from Maria do Carmo Santos , widower of Tomás Cunha Santos, direct descendant of Julio A. Cunha. The actual Quinta Vigia had two names before the present one: Quinta Lambert and Quinta das Angústias; name in use when the Cunha family was leaving there. Tomás Cunha (died in 26/11/2013) was the last direct descendent of Julio Cunha as he did not have any child.
Julio A. Cunha which started the company. Now all family members have passed away.

Tasting note: High toned, straw and lemon fresh style of nose. Subdued backward still, touch of butter. Pure and youthful appearance. Good concentration.
Soft creamy taste start, buttery mouthfeel, pure citrus fruit flavors followed by great finesse of acidity. Lingering fresh finish of classic aged Sercial. Love this wine. February 2016.
Most recently. Smoky, fudge style. Widening intense broad mouth feel. Well balanced, a pleasure to drink. Very good still. In line with previous notes. Last tasted January 2020. Edwin Vos
