HM Borges, Pather Terrantez 1720
Recorked in March 2021. New wax capsules with Borges seal. Stencilled bottle with back label and neck hanger certificate of recorking by Ivo Couto (HM Borges cellar master). Level: into-neck

This is the oldest bottling, the other was done in 1989. The cork in this bottle was from the 1970s. Tasted at the Borges lodge with the family, in preparation for a unique exclusive auction offer.

Tasting note: After pulling the cork, the wine needed to come around and open up. Already a short time in the glass did its wonders and transformed the aromas significantly. An intriguing, refined nose of subtle fudge notes and floral aromas prevail over sweet fruits. All quite refined and in superb balance, a symphony. Very concentrated, even shortly after opening this Pather is making a strong impression. Must have been a high-quality wine from the start. Which makes you think how Madeira looked when the grapes for this wine were harvested, a rare emotion.
The start of taste is fairly rich for a Terrantez, flowing out in a soft but very concentrated way. Finalizing with impressive aromas and a highly concentrated acidity, all in superb balance. The start is fairly rich while the finish is dry, all with high extracts. A strong wine of Royal Class, complex, impressive, with a fantastic balance. This is amazing, beautiful, full of emotions which leaves you speechless. Grateful to enjoy such a history in a bottle.
The day after I was able to retaste this 1720 from the same bottle, now after 24 hours it showed fantastically well. Strong flavored and multi-dimensional. This is so complex, with a sheer superb balance. In the same a touch drier style of the highest quality. Especially the taste is fantastically balanced, refined with infinitive life ahead. Vinous 300 year old history of unbelievable high quality. It’s with honor to those who harvested these grapes in the early 18th century that I bow my head. 99p.July 2020. EV.
A year later from a rebottled bottle. Which unfortunately had a new cork with TCA.
Refined subtle fudge notes, quite reserved and modest at first.
Fine softly sweet mouth filling taste, creamy and very complex. Beautiful intensity. Focused lingering acidity. Great wine of such phenomenal elegance.
Just a very slight touch of TCA. Unfortunately. Very good expanding flavour on second taste from different glass. Strong wine with superb length. A legend, a shame that this bottle has been affected by a cork taint. April 2021. At best 99p
