Quinta do Serrado, Malmsey, Madeira 1830
Good appearance. Level: into-neck
Quinta do Serrado was owned by Antonio and his brother, João Joaquim Henriques. Founders of Henriques & Henriques. In 1968 when João died the company was sold. The old Quinta do Serrado wines were transferred from cask to demi johns in 1935, and bottled in 1988. They were stored first at Henriques & Henriques and later in Antonio Eduardo Henriques warehouses. In 1989 a large collection was sold from the family reserves, baring a white Christie’s label. Smaller quantities were sold in 2013.
Tasting note: First tasted in 2015. Sweet caramel, bit medicinal, quite high toned. On second nose, lovely honey cake. Really complex. Hazelnuts. Great richness, fine soft sweet and lingering followed by fine heavenly acidity. Fine bitterness on the lingering. Powerful wine with endless length. What a wine. Then nine years later from a sample taken by the family; Softly sweet, high toned nose of fudge and vintage wax, with touch of salinity and fine peach fruit. Subtle start of taste, then followed by an explosion of fruits. Beautiful in it’s strength and seductive fruit with a more tangy finish flowing out to a nice softly sweet lingering after taste. Beautiful Malvasia with a suave mouthfeel, full of tropical fruits. Wonderful. 96p. Last tasted April 2024. EV.
