ALAN BENNETT (b.1934)
The History Boys. London: Faber and Faber, 2004

Bennett also includes a range of autobiographical details, from the positioning of photographs in his grandmother’s house to a characteristic remark about his youthful devoutness: ‘I was quite religious as a boy and always felt vicars were embarrassed by my piety. They wanted to rescue souls not be given them on a plate.’
