CAROL ANN DUFFY (b.1955)
The Worlds Wife. London: Picador, 1999.
First edition, signed by the former Poet Laureate on the title page and augmented with a 20-line autograph poem titled Nest. Duffy’s fifth collection of poems gives voice to the unheard female counterparts of famous male figures throughout history and myth, such as ‘Anne Hathaway’, ‘Mrs Darwin’, ‘The Devil’s Wife’, ‘Queen Kong’, and ‘The Kray Sisters’. The beautiful supplementary poem, written across two blank pages in the end matter and relating to the recent Coronavirus lockdowns, takes flight from the idea that birds will use strands of hair to construct their nests.

Octavo. Original green boards, gilt lettering to spine, pictorial dust jacket.
