COLM TOĺBĺN (b.1955) – NICK HORNBY (b.1957)
Brooklyn. Privately printed by Twentieth Century Fox, 2015.
A heavily-annotated screenplay originally printed for the Oscars voting membership, marked For your considerationwith lively commentary by Colm Tóibín. The romantic period drama Brooklyn, based on Tóibín's 2009 novel of the same name, won critical acclaim on its release in 2015 and was nominated for three Academy Awards – Best Picture, Best Actress (for Saoirse Ronan’s much-lauded performance as Eilis Lacey, a young Irish woman recently arrived in 1950s Brooklyn), and Best Adapted Screenplay – as well as winning the BAFTA for Best British Film. Here, Tóibín adds over 1,600 words of commentary in blue and black ink across 65 pages of Hornby's screenplay: the author discusses the mechanics of making films and how they differ from novels, muses on the role of the novelist, mentions his cameo in Brooklyn, and expands on how the loneliness of the immigrant experience resonates with him, as well as adding amusing anecdotes about his experience of the Oscars and other such parties, and praising Ronan’s performance and Hornby’s adaptation.
