Lot Essay

The Post-Modernist Brazilian artist Vik Muniz is famous for recreating images with unusual materials, such as toys, diamonds, chocolate, refuse, dry powdered pigment and sugar. Such ephemeral compositions are than photographed and magnified by the artist. In Hermes (Pictures of Chocolate) the artist reinterprets the Greek god of transitions and boundaries. Muniz realized the work on a minute scale, outlining the figure with chocolate syrup. The extremely detail oriented photographs tap into the history of art, reconstructing scenery that invites the spectator to further investigate his inventive materials and procedures.
