Lot Essay

Adi Nes (b. 1965) is a photographer who explores the themes of identity in his work, specifically, ideas of masculinity, homosexuality and Israeli nationality. Often, the artist stages elaborate scenes, using models and sets to create an image that is charged with questions about how these identities exist and are further perceived in our society. The present lot is part of his 2003 series Prisoners, which was commissioned by Vogue Hommes International and included in their 2003-2004 Winter publication. While the subjects are models and the clothing was provided by the magazine, they are purposefully styled to look like as though the photographs are documentary pieces of Israeli prisoners. Here, the artist's objective to reflect upon how situations can be idealized for the viewer is particularly magnified given its contextualization in a fashion magazine.
