Lot Essay
Meticulously rendered in nickel and enamel, Koenraad Dedobbeleer’s Various Difficulties Entailed in the Act of Recollection is a pristine simulacra of a red Solo drinking cup. Executed in 2009, another work from the edition was exhibited the same year at Dedobbeleer’s solo exhibition Boredom won’t starve as long as I feed it at the Museum Haus Esters in Krefeld, granted as part of the artist’s receipt of the Mies van der Rohe Stipend. Working primarily as a sculptor, the Belgian artist creates uncanny replicas of everyday items, displacing them from their original contexts and encouraging the viewer to encounter them afresh. Exhibited upon the floor, alone and precariously balanced, the present work transforms the iconic American cup into a strange imposter, both familiar and disturbingly alien. By subtly disrupting the quotidian, Dedobbeleer invites us to re-evaluate our perception of reality.

The work is structurally sound. There is a hairline crack (approx 1cm.) at the rim, presumably due to the artist's working method. There is an abrasion with associated pinpoint paint losses near the edge on the underside. It is our view that the work appears to be in generally good condition.
