With its instantly recognizable imagery, Untitled is part of Mario Schifano’s series of works based on the iconic Coca-Cola logo. With its vivid red, painterly brushstrokes, the painting embodies the artist’s engagement with consumerist iconography and fine art of the post-war period. Although Schifano is affiliated with the ascension of a global Pop art, his approach was fundamentally distinct from that of his American contemporaries including Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. Although Coca-Cola came to symbolise an aggressive capitalism, the rise of Communism in the aftermath of World War II presented an alternative polemic. Within this context, Schifano’s use of the logo points to a complicated politics, and the expressive colour and fragmented text underscore the shifting associations that Coca-Cola connotes. Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas, stretcher and attachments appear to be in generally good condition. There are a few hairline cracks and minute accretions to the extreme edges. There are a few areas of discolouration, primarily to the letters. When examined under ultra-violet light, there are a few areas to the upper and lower right corners that fluoresce in a manner consistent with inpainting. It is our view that the work appears to be in generally good condition. Catalogue illustration: Fairly accurate.
