Lot Essay

Blending oil paint and oil stick with debris from the artist’s studio, Untitled is a mesmerising example of Oscar Murillo’s raw visual language. Born in Colombia and raised in London, his practice explores concepts of distance, dislocation and temporality. Murillo often takes up to several months to complete his works, folding, cutting and stitching different sections before leaving them to accumulate dust and debris upon his studio floor. The results are layered with intuitive painterly marks, recalling the schismatic gestures of Cy Twombly and Jackson Pollock. In this way, the work offers a disjointed snapshot of passing time, confronting the viewer like an excavated relic.
