Lot Essay

Since graduating from the Royal College of Art, London in 1992, Phillip Allen has since held exhibitions in prominent galleries and exhibition spaces worldwide including in New York, Paris, Hong Kong, Italy and at the Tate Britain in London among others. His works are characterised by their vivid graphic quality and abundance of vibrant patterns which consume the surface of his works.
Simultaneously mesmerising yet also foreboding, Phillip Allen’s Dubious Plan presents an accumulation of sharp, jagged triangles juxtaposed with curved organic forms which subsume the entirety of the work, characteristic of Allen’s graphic patterns. Inspired by both Cubism and Art Deco styles, the abstract sea and volume of forms is enhanced by the luminous quality of line and the stark contrast of dark and light. This inundating mass of geometric elements is further accentuated by the immense scale of the work which encompasses the viewer, highlighting its immersive quality.
