Lot Essay
Executed in 1972 and having remained in the same collection, Study for a Wall Drawing, Kunsthalle, Berne Switzerland, 1972 is Sol Lewitt’s preparatory sketch for one of the wall drawings from his celebrated series. Lewitt created a series of wall drawings, each a rigorous combination of lines, grids and shapes drawn according to his precise diagrams and instructions. Lewitt named his wall drawings ‘continuous forms’ owing to their endless reproducibility and variation; what mattered to him was the concept and not its visualization. Study for a Wall Drawing, Kunsthalle, Berne Switzerland, 1972 presents five possible compositions inked in black on brown paper, each pattern a slight different cast of lines. The study provides a glimpse into Lewitt’s process, the planning behind the conceptual gesture.
