With its sleek, interlocking geometric formations, Untitled (#10) is a refined example of Tomma Abts’ drawings. The work was included in the artist’s 2005 exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel: a show that ultimately led to her receipt of the Turner Prize the following year. Currently the subject of a major solo exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, London, until 9 September, Abts explores the relationship between logic and intuition through a constantly-evolving body of abstract works. Operating without pictorial planning or source material, she allows her compositions to unfold of their own accord, relishing the relationships between colour and form that emerge over the course of her long, slow working process. ‘It is a completely open process, starting from a point of nothing, with no guaranteed outcome, every single time’, she explains. ‘I am not making process painting; the process is always directed at the final image, and the precise definition of it’(T. Abts, quoted at http://www.serpentinegalleries.org/exhibitions-events/tomma-abts [accessed 8 August 2018]).
