FURTHER DETAILS
Based in London, British painter Dan Perfect creates electrifying rhapsodies of line and colour, in which abstract shapes come together to form what he describes as 'imagined interior or psychological landscapes'. 'My paintings are full of experimentation', he explains. 'Everything is partial: masks, costumes, body parts, animals that are human, humans that are animals, things are taken apart and exploded.' Painted in 2005, the present work was inspired by Carlos Castaneda’s 1968 cultural thesis The Teachings of Don Juan, in which he describes an encounter with a ‘brujo’: a medicine man or sorcerer. With its rich psychedelic tapestry of abstract forms and smoke plumes, the painting conjures the mental fragmentation experienced by Castaneda: 'I like the idea of an anthropologist going out into the desert and being broken down', explains Perfect. Acquired by the Saatchi Gallery in 2006, the work was included in their exhibition Newspeak: British Art Now.
