The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
Structural Condition
The canvas is unlined and is securely attached with staples to the reverse of the artist’s original fixed wooden strainer. The canvas displays good tension and is inscribed by the artist on the reverse. The overall structural condition appears to be very good.
Paint Surface
The paint surface has the artist's original unvarnished appearance and the paint appears secure throughout. Upon close inspection, faint hairlines of craquelure are visible to the immediate left of the sitter's face. These appear stable. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows the paint surface to fluoresce unevenly, as is characteristic of the artist's materials. The lines of craquelure also have a faint fluorescence and a few very small spots of retouching can be seen.
Summary
This work would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition.
