Lot Essay

At once both a found object and an item imbued with modern, lived experience, David Hammon’s Head warmer is a sculpture of contemporary importance. Formerly held in the collection of Jan Hoet, famed Documenta curator and founder of Ghent’s SMAK, Head warmer is emblematic not only of Hammons’ ability to transform found materials into art but also of the close relationship that Hoet and Hammons shared.
