Lot Essay

Louise Nevelson created this particular Throne around the same time she was working on her monumental Mrs. N's Palace, which resides in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Nevelson created around two or three Throne works that she was also considering donating to the Metropolitan Museum; however, she ultimately retained all of them. This particular Throne was given to Dianna MacKown, her studio assistant, who then loaned the work to her memorable Farnsworth show in 1979.
