What You See Is What You Get.

The Xerox Star 1108, introduced in 1981, was the first commercial personal computer designed for business professionals with an integrated graphical user interface (GUI). Developed by Xerox PARC, it featured revolutionary concepts such as windows, icons, folders, and a mouse, significantly influencing future GUI designs. The Star 1108 built upon the Alto’s principle of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editing, which allowed users to see a document's final appearance as they edited it, a major advancement in user-friendly design.

Despite its advanced technology and visionary features, the Star 1108 faced challenges due to its high price and limited software ecosystem, which restricted its market adoption. Nevertheless, its innovations laid the groundwork for many GUI elements seen in modern computing systems, including the multi-window interface and the use of graphical icons to represent files and applications. The Star 1108’s design principles and interface concepts were instrumental in shaping subsequent developments in personal computing and provided a foundational influence on later systems, including Apple's Macintosh and Microsoft's Windows operating systems.
