Lot Essay

The first of thirty 'King' Class locomotives built at the Swindon works by the Great Western Railway No. 6000 was named after the then monarch when completed in June 1927. The bell, seldom found on British locomotives, was a presentation gift from the Baltimore and Ohio Railway Company in commemoration of its centenary celebration when the locomotive was shipped to the United States in August 1927. After returning it then covered 1,910,424 miles before being withdrawn from service in December 1962. The engine is preserved as part of the National Railway Museum Collection.
