Saint Catherine

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The painting presents very well overall, with the delicacy of the drapery and the modeling of the saint's face well preserved. In a raking light there is evidence of retouching in the background, notably to the left of the saint. The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. There has been some thinning to the paint surface as a result of this process. Examination under UV light reveals some minor scattered retouching to the flesh tones. There is some further minor retouching to the drapery and background. The paint remains stable.
