Lot Essay
The group of the Wrestlers was discovered in 1583 near Porta S. Giovanni, Rome, and was purchased in the same year by Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici from the Varese family. The group was placed in the Tribuna of the Uffizi in 1688, and has remained there since apart from a brief period when the sculpture was removed to Palermo to escape the French in 1800, and returned in 1803. It became a highly popular model in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
In good overall condition. With heavily polished chocolately brown patina. Some rubbing and scratching. Strong build up of dirt and dust to the crevices and would benefit from a light clean. Some remains of gold painted inscription to the front. Blue-bordered label to the interior. Highly decorative.
