Lot Essay

This striking and unusually compact secretaire draws on the designs of Thomas Chippendale, particularly in the unusual and distinctive use of mirrors to the centre of the glazed doors of the upper section. However, the constructional details, such as the unusual way in which the chequer-cornice is constructed from alternating blocks perhaps has more in common with the celebrated cabinet makers Gillows of London and Lancaster.
